Mika's Song, a Final Scene

On the rugged hillside outside the small village of Asu, silvery moonlight silhouettes the faces of two figures sitting on a stone gazing at the night sky. A man, not so tall in stature but with broad shoulders and a steady hand on his staff, is just finishing telling a story to a small boy.

Mika's Song, Chapter 26

As soon as Mika mounted Master Ghasaan's camel, the riders urged their beasts into a gallop. Very soon they saw the campfires of a village ahead, and then in the silvery light, the flat roofs of the town. It was a town much smaller than Jerusalem, and with no wall. At first, it appeared as though the light from the star were setting the whole town alight, but as they came closer, the shaft of light seemed to narrow itself to one area near the edge of the town.

Mika's Song, Chapter 25

Nothing could have kept the eager band of travelers from rushing to Bethlehem in the bright light of the star that night. Nothing, that is, except a band of shepherds and their dim-witted animals filling the southbound road out of the city of Jerusalem. Mika had pulled his dap out for an energetic ballad to the star and the great anticipation in his heart, but the interruption in their journey made him restless, and he was now padding along after the sheep, wishing he had a way to hurry them along.

Mika's Song, Chapter 24

The throne room of King Herod the Great was humming with an air of muffled excitement. It was early evening and the king and his cabinet had finished dining in the great hall when he had been informed of his strange, distinguished guests from the East. Now as he made his way to the throne room, courtiers clustered around the entrance and servants peeked through doorways.

Mika's Song, Chapter 23
Picture
The smooth marble felt cool under Mika's feet as he stepped into the temple courtyard after climbing the tall stairway. He was surprised to find the entrance filled with more merchants selling animals for offering and jingling coins. His eyes scanned the crowd of customers lingering around the booths, then he dashed past them. In the middle of the immense courtyard he stopped, turning slowly to look all around. Around the periphery of the courtyard, sheltered by an overhanging ceiling, were more merchant booths. There were also priests sacrificing animals. In the middle of the courtyard Mika saw another stone structure surrounded by more stairs. He climbed up and up to the wide veranda for a better view, but there were so many people....

Mika's Song, Chapter 22
Picture
Mika could hardly contain his excitement. After two more long weeks traveling through Yisra'el land from Damascus, they were finally approaching Jerusalem. They were so close now that they didn't bother traveling only at night. In fact, the star they had watched and followed so carefully through the long desert nights had faded until they could no longer see it, even through their glass. Sometimes they were still tempted to doubt, especially because, this close to the Yisra'el Royal city, none of the travelers they met seemed to know anything about a new born king. But they could always count on faithful Master Bobac, who's spirits never faded in spite of the fact he could neither see nor walk anymore.

Mika's Song, Chapter 21

On the first night out of Tadmor, Mika saw men collecting something from some scruffy desert trees. The tallest trees were no taller than two men and some had yellow flowers on them. "What are they doing?" Mika interrupted Master Toutak, who was painstakingly trying to take him through a Yisra'el language lesson.

Mika's Song, Chapter 20
Picture
Dear Readers, I had great ambitions of continuing/finishing this story this Christmas, but when I tried to get back into it, I found myself faced with incredible writer's block and fear of failure. I have finally made up my mind that I MUST continue the story, no matter how bad I do, because the worst would be to leave it undone! So here it is...
